What is a psychoeducational assessment?

A psychoeducational assessment, sometimes called a psych ed assessment, looks at how a person thinks, learns and processes information. It measures thinking skills such as reasoning, memory and processing speed, alongside academic skills in reading, writing and math. Together, these show a learner's strengths and the reasons behind their struggles.

The results can identify a learning disability, giftedness, or a twice-exceptional (2e) profile where a gifted learner also has a learning, attention or developmental difference. Most importantly, the report gives schools and families specific recommendations they can use.

Signs a psychoeducational assessment could help

  • Reading, spelling, writing or math is much harder than it should be
  • Your child works hard but grades do not reflect their ability
  • Homework takes hours and ends in tears
  • A teacher has mentioned a possible learning disability
  • Your child seems advanced, bored or disengaged at school
  • You want to know if your child qualifies for a gifted program or school designation
  • A teen or adult needs documentation for exam accommodations at school or university

What the assessment includes

  • Parent, client and, with consent, teacher interviews and questionnaires
  • Cognitive testing, such as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children (WISC-V)
  • Academic achievement testing, such as the Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT-IV)
  • Screening of attention, memory, executive functioning and social-emotional wellbeing
  • A feedback meeting in plain language
  • A detailed written report with recommendations for school and home

Gifted and twice-exceptional learners

Gifted learners are sometimes overlooked because they cope well, or misunderstood because their behaviour does not match their ability. Twice-exceptional learners can be gifted and have ADHD, autism, anxiety or a learning disability at the same time, which can hide both their strengths and their needs. Our psychologists have specific experience with gifted and 2e profiles and can help you advocate for the right fit at school.

Turning the report into action

We walk you through the report and can, with your consent, share findings with your child's school. If emotional or behavioural support would help, our counsellors and family coach can continue the work within the same practice.
